COVID-19 was a wake-up call for many who realized that the 9-5 corporate grind wasn’t for them. Millennials abandoned the workforce in droves early on in favor of more work/life balance. But that tide has largely peaked and it’s no longer just the millennials who are having this epiphany. Older workers over 50 have jumped on the bandwagon, with many of those leaving corporate America these days. As with many millennials, older workers want to create an environment that works for them. We see this every day and we’ve been at the forefront of helping start-ups and businesses negotiate the work/life balance, creating environments that make for a fun, friendly and flexible workspace.
Quit rates – and what’s driving them
In March of this year, quit rates reached 3% – the previous high set during the pandemic, with 4.5 million people leaving their jobs in that month alone. This August, it lowered every so slightly at 2.7%. The industries with highest quit rates for this year include the private sector, information sector, financial sector, and professional business services sector.
In the first and second quarter of this year, there was a 34% increase in quit rates by 50–60 year-olds, and a 37% increase amongst 45–50 year-olds. By tenure, this included a quit rate of 57% amongst people who had been in their job for 10-15 years, and a 71% increase for those who had held their job for 15-20 years.
These are your sector’s most experienced and, in many cases, most valuable employees – so why are they leaving? Common reasons cited in studies include:
- A desire to continue working remotely
- Wanting a better work/life balance
- Desire for purposeful work
- Growing their career
- Looking for a great work experience
How employee-focused office design can help your post-COVID workspace
Office design is always changing, and it can count for a lot when it comes to meeting the needs of employees. We recommend a few changes that include:
- Resimercial office design that brings the comfort of home into the workspace
- Focusing on wellness in the workplace to create a healthy, enjoyable space
- Moving to a hub-and-spoke model that supports remote and flexible working (as well as cost savings!)
- Creating an office design that actively supports office workers and makes them want to work there
Combatting the Great Resignation doesn’t mean giving up on your office – it means rethinking your approach to the world of work. We’re passionate about delivering spaces that are not just an office, and firmly believe that customizing each office design to a client’s specific goals helps to create happier, healthier, and more productive spaces.
