Boardroom Furniture: How to Measure for Functionality and Fit

Setting up your company boardroom is about more than just selecting impressive furniture; you need to consider the space itself too if you want it to be fully functional. Here are some tips from our design team.

  • Walkways: Entry paths need to be a certain width to ensure comfort for people sitting at a boardroom table as well as those moving past them. This means ensuring that there is an unobstructed walkway of 36 inches at a minimum between the table and wall. Where there is seating, this should be extended to 42 inches to ensure that people can be comfortably seated while still allowing others to move past.
  • Table shape and size: Your boardroom table is the focus of this space, so it’s essential that it is the right proportion and shape for the space. Too big and everyone will be cramped, too small and there won’t be enough space to seat everyone. The shape influences how many people can be seated at the table at one time. Rectangular, boat or square tables provide the most seating for their size, while round, oval and racetrack provide the least. For example, a rectangular table that needs to seat 8 people will be around 4×8 feet and require a 11×17 foot room. A round table for the same number of people will be 8 foot in diameter and require a 15×15 room. A videoconferencing table for 7 people will be 5×8 feet in size and require a 12×15 foot room.
  • Boardroom chairs: There’s a wide range of chair styles and shapes on the market and it’s best to go with something that really suits the tone of your brand – but keep in mind that the chair width will affect how many people can be comfortably seated at the table. It’s important that these chairs are adjustable and ergonomic, so that they’re comfortable and supportive during longer meetings and conference calls.
  • Additional boardroom furniture: Although these are multifunction spaces, most boardrooms look best when they furnishings are kept minimal. However, if you use video conferencing equipment, want to use the space for presentations or other activities, there needs to be sufficient space designated for these activities, including screens, AV equipment and presentation space (usually 5 feet along one length or width of a room). To add character to the space, a large piece of art is always a good choice, as are architectural glass walls.

3 Workspace Design Mistakes to Avoid

Designing a workspace is an exciting project that can be very rewarding for your company and your employees by creating a more productive, enjoyable and engaged working environment. However, it is not an easy task! Getting it wrong can be a costly mistake that means years of working in a space that simply does not work for you. Here are the most common design mistakes to avoid, from our team of contemporary office furniture specialists:

  1. Blindly Following the Latest Trend:

Committing to the latest office design trends without thinking them through can be a big mistake. While some trends are fantastic, they are not going to deliver the right results for you if it doesn’t work for your company or industry. For example, open and collaborative spaces are great in a marketing agency where teams have to work together across departments, brainstorm and get creative – but this trend won’t work well in a law firm where you need private spaces to assure client confidentiality.

  1. Failing to Future-Proof Your Space:

Redesigning your office space is a big, time-consuming and expensive project, so you will want your new space to last for at least 5 years. However, the fast pace of technology and the need for businesses to be as agile as possible means that your needs and requirements are likely to shift during this time period – and your office design needs to be able to adapt with these changes. Infrastructure for wireless charging and smartphones/mobile tech is important, as are moveable architectural walls, adjustable height desks and chairs, and modular workstations.

  1. The One-Size-Fits-All Space:

The problem with this approach – for example, having identical workstations and office chairs for each employee – is that no-one really fits this generic model. These stations make it difficult to work flexibly, to collaborate or communicate with ease, and they are often uncomfortable, leading to lower productivity and wellness issues. Instead, choose furniture that suits the use of the different designated spaces, is adjustable for height and easily moved or customized. Introduce different desk types to suit different work styles – sit-stand desks, for example.

Great Plants that Add Life to Your Workplace

Nature and plant life are often a focus of modern office design and it’s not hard to see why. Studies have shown that connecting employees with nature in the workplace results in reduced stress, increased productivity, reduced absenteeism, cleaner air, and a more attractive, creative and quieter office space. Not all plants can thrive in an office environment, however, so it’s important to choose the right plants for your space. Here’s a quick guide from our team of modern boardroom and contemporary office furniture specialists.

Make These Plants Work with Your Contemporary Office Furniture

  • The Peace Lilly: Part of the Araceae family, the Peace Lilly is low maintenance with pretty white flowers that last for ages. They come in a variety of sizes, so they can work as desk or floor plants and although it’s a tropical plant, it loves the shade. One of its most notable qualities is that NASA put it on their list of Top Ten Household Air Cleaning Plants.
  • Sansevieria: These plants are native to Africa and have long, tall, green leaves that grow outward from a central point, giving it the common name of Snake Plant or Mother-in-law’s Tongue. It is a very low maintenance plant and is known for tolerating shade very well, making it great for offices. In addition to their striking leaves, these plants can have white, lilac-red or brown flowers.
  • Succulents: There are a huge variety of succulents available, and their low-water and low-maintenance nature makes them suited to office life. However, they do require lots of sunlight, so make sure they’re in a sunny spot on a window ledge or in your outdoor area. They look lovely mixed together in bowls and the flowering varieties add an extra spot of color.
  • Ficus: If you’re looking to add something substantial, a ficus tree is the way to go. While they do require medium to high light and moderate watering, they do well in office environments and are known for their exceptional air purification and humidity control benefits.
  • Orchids: If you have good light in your office, orchids will do very well in your space. They are surprisingly hardy and come in a huge range of flower colors and shapes, adding a tropical but elegant touch. They are very sensitive to over-watering, so it’s important to ensure that they are never standing in water and that the pots are well-drained.

How Millennials Are Changing The Workspace

It seems like every day we’re confronted with a new article about what Millennials are doing, thinking or ruining now, but the truth is that this generation is bringing some interesting changes to the workplace. Here’s some insight into the modern office design ideas that are changing the way we work.

Office design affects the way we work

The Internet-first generation makes it easier than ever before to collect and analyze data from surveys and studies, and these have shown that there’s a clear link between an environment’s physical design and décor, and the state of mind of the people who work there. In fact, 77% of interviewed respondents on LinkedIn said that art in the workplace makes them feel happier, and that 27% said that good décor made them more productive.

It’s true that the workplace changes with each generation, and Millennials are bringing their own brand of flavor to the workplace, including:

  • Non-conventional workplaces: While Baby-Boomers were characterized in the workplace as placing a high priority on their own space and privacy – like having your own office – Millennials have shown a distinct favor for going against this tradition. This has led to the rise of collaborative workspaces, flexible furniture, and even flexible floorplans. Cubicles have fallen far out of favor, replaced with more casual, open environments that encourage an easy flow throughout the office.
  • Leaning into technology: Previous generations have demonstrated a resistance or even fear of technology – the idea that machines will come along and replace you. Millennials have turned this on its head by fully buying into the reality that tech is here to stay. Not only does this support a move towards non-conventional office design and working on-the-go, it’s also about creating a slick and in-touch image for your brand.
  • Design with purpose and pleasure: These days, many of us can and do work from anywhere. Even if people have an office, you’ll often see them getting work done wherever they are – coffee shops are a favorite, but so are co-working spaces and outdoor plazas. People are choosing spaces not only because they are conducive to different working styles, but because they take pleasure in their surroundings, and this is causing companies to take a look at their offices and move towards creating a similarly pleasurable and functional space. A big part of this trend is a move towards contemporary office furniture and decor that promote wellness and are environmentally sustainable, from ergonomic desks and chairs to recycled materials and Green policies.

Boardroom Furniture – A Buyer’s Guide

Boardrooms are one of the most important areas of your office space, at the top of the office furniture hierarchy. This is because it holds important functions for both your executive team and employees, as well as clients, shareholders and committees. As such, it has to not only embody the focus and culture of your business, but also provide a high level of functionality – and achieving this means buying the right modern boardroom furniture. Here’s a quick, useful guide.

Function first through modern boardroom design

While looks are important, they come second to functionality. Boardroom furniture has come a long way from simply being the biggest and most expensive desk in the office, and clever designs now incorporate a wide range of practical functionality into this important furniture. Desks are now available in a huge range of shapes and sizes to allow for more flexible seating and use. A Boardroom table can be a single table or a composite table that can be split up for everyday use. They can also come in a range of materials, from glossy solid walnut and oak to steel, glass and almost anything you can think of.

Here, it’s key to discuss how you want your boardroom to function before you look at tables. Factors to look at include:

  • If you’ll have a dedicated space that will only be used for high level meetings, and not on a daily basis.
  • If you are looking for a more flexible office design where boardrooms are used daily for additional office space, storage, private client calls and smaller meetings, as a casual meeting place or as an office lounge.
  • If you have a set, permanent space for your boardroom meetings, or if you instead want to be able to create a boardroom space using movable glass walls and a flexible office space design.
  • How many people you generally have attending boardroom meetings, if this number is regular or changes significantly.

This will help you decide on the shape of your table, the size and whether or not it makes sense to invest in more innovative or classic design options.

Comfortable contemporary office furniture

While your boardroom table might be the star of the show, chairs are the supporting cast and need to be just as carefully selected. Again, the look of the chairs is up to your company’s personal style – but functionality is key. Comfort is a priority, and you can’t go wrong with an ergonomic design that allows each person to adjust the chair for their personal comfort, especially if you are likely to have long meetings.

A second and equally important factor when looking at boardroom chairs is how many will fit comfortably around your selected table. Bulky chairs are going to take up more space and be more difficult to move in and out, as well as being more difficult to store. Sleeker designs can be just as comfortable, and offer greater ease of use.
